Sangkara was launched with three
essential values: hard work, creativity
and passion.

Founder Ida Bagus Gede Taruna
Wijaya, who the team endearingly call
Bapak Gusde, started this business in
1981. From humble beginnings within
an art shop owned by his family, the
business has blossomed into so much
more. Its holding company, PT. Bali
Busana, is widely known in Bali and
abroad.

In the early days when air travel to
Bali had just begun, Bapak Gusde and
his family used to sell Balinese
handicrafts such as statues and
carvings, as well as traditional
hand-made textiles for which
Indonesia is famous. Increasingly,
guests coming to the store were
interested in fashion, and would
ask for the textiles to be made into
clothes. The shop employed capable
seamstresses to tailor-make clothes
to the sketches made by guests, who
would also occasionally bring
examples to replicate or modify.

Seeing how satisfied customers
were with the quality produced by
their capable seamstresses, Bapak
Gusde thought it would be a good
idea to embark upon a journey into
the garment manufacturing market.
This would give more creative work
to his employees who were already
employed to look after the shop, and
also enable them to more fully utilize
the space and equipment.

“Everything
starts from
zero plus
inspiration”.

– Bapak Gusde

A team soon formed around the few
experienced tailors, who were eager
and willing to share their knowledge.
Bapak Gusde assigned a dedicated
place where the team could all work,
locating it next to his office to enable
him to give regular feedback. The first
step was made. A few orders began
trickling in from passing visitors, until
watershed moments came, such as
meeting importers from Denmark,
and then South Africa, evolving the
production as larger orders were
made and confirmed.

The 1980s ended with a bang: A
partnership with an Italian garment
manufacturer. The business grew
exponentially, operating at least two
large-scale factories in Bali since.
Fully equipped with modern
equipment across divisions such as
knitting, weaving, and many more,
customer success meant steady
growth for Sangkara. From having
tailors fulfilling orders from home,
to establishing factory after factory,
this booming Bali baby was getting
noticed abroad.

Collaboration offers came from
companies across the UK, Europe and
USA. Sangkara helped them achieve
their goals in a timely manner,
providing high quality of goods and
services. Sangkara has built a solid
reputation in producing excellent
quality tops, skirts, dresses, blouses,
shorts and more for many years. Our
team’s pride arises from the feedback
trusted partners and beloved
customers continue to give us.

“My vision is to build a company that
is not only beneficial for my family,
but most importantly, it must be
beneficial for all of our employees
and customers,” says Bapak Gusde.

Building a legacy of hard work,
perseverance and passion has driven
Bapak Gusde for four decades. He
hopes his legacy will stand the test
of time. To ensure this, he generously
shares his experience with his
children and management team.
